Living in a rural area shouldn’t mean not having access to high quality health care.  At Springfield Hospital, our board-certified Emergency Department providers and exceptional nursing staff are prepared to take care of your medical concerns.  Springfield Hospital Emergency Department offers trauma and critical care, behavioral health care, and specially designed treatment areas to meet your diverse needs. Upon arrival, unless your condition requires immediate attention by a provider, you will be promptly screened by one of our experienced nurses to determine the severity of your condition and the appropriate initial steps in your care. We are committed to keeping you near home and loved ones. If you require continued hospitalization, we will coordinate your ongoing care with our Hospitalist service.  However, if a transfer to a higher level of care is in your best interest, we will stabilize you and arrange ground or air transport to the closest accepting facility.  

Springfield Hospital’s Emergency Department, located at 25 Ridgewood Road in Springfield, VT, is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Specialized Trainings

Our ED nurses maintain competence in the field of Emergency nursing by attending the following courses:

ACLS Provider Course
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, presented by the American Heart Association, is designed for healthcare providers. This course enhances the skills of providers in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiac emergency. All Emergency Department RN’s have this certification.

Certified Emergency Nurse
This course is the certification specific to emergency nursing and measures the attainment of a defined body of nursing knowledge pertinent to this specialty.

Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)
This course strengthens the RN’s Pediatric emergency skills in order to meet the needs of this diverse population and provide excellent nursing care to a specialized group of patients. All Emergency Department RNs have either this or PALS certification.

Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education
This course informs about the Geriatric patient. Components covered are: Discharge planning, attitudes and ageism, physical and psychological changes, pain management, abuse and neglect, polypharmacy, palliative care and triage, and assessment.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
This course develops the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. All Emergency Department nurses are certified in either this or ENPC.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner
This course teaches the coordination of both expert forensic and the medical care necessary to increase successful prosecution of sex offenders, to assure essential medical intervention to victims of assault age 12 and over. All of our RN’s are able to perform the exam. Some RN’s have further certification in this specialty.

Trauma Nurse Care Course
This course teaches a systematic and standard approach to the care of the trauma patient. All the full-time RN’s in the Emergency Department have this certification.

Triage Prioritizes Patient Care Needs

All patients are triaged with the ESI 5 level triage system upon arrival at our Emergency Department. Patients are assessed and given a triage number based on the acuity of their condition. Patients are then seen based on the severity of their condition. We have specialized Physicians on call to see patients in the Emergency Department when a referral is appropriate.

Inpatient Care

Sometimes, hospitalization may be necessary for ongoing care and treatment of your illness or injury. If so, our Emergency Department staff will coordinate your transition and ongoing care with our Inpatient Care Unit. This team will coordinate your hospital stay and work closely with your provider and primary care team.

Specialty care is coordinated when it is medically necessary. If you need specialty care not available at Springfield Hospital, your health condition will be stabilized and you will be transported to a specialized facility for a higher level of care.

Care Coordination

Case managers will coordinate your care. Helping you select a medical home for your ongoing care and arrange other services you may need when you leave. Financial, pharmacy, social service assistance, nutritionists, behavioral health professionals and physical therapists are some of the many resources available to you through your primary care team at your medical home primary care office.
